In our recent webinar, Khirika Jamison, Senior Account Manager at Mapbox, and Ryan Leidigh, ODL Product Lead at Mapbox, provided an insightful exploration into the realm of on demand logistics. The session started with an overview of the opportunities and challenges within this industry, followed by an introduction to the innovative solutions and benefits offered by Mapbox to address these challenges. The Mapbox team also showed several customer showcases including Instacart, Picnic and Wolt and a live demo of Mapbox use cases. The webinar ended with a 15-minute Q&A segment, so attendees could ask live questions and have their questions answered in real-time.

Opportunities and Challenges in On-Demand Logistics

After getting a gauge on audience industries, Khirika highlighted the significant growth and potential within the on-demand logistics market. Currently valued at around $16.5 billion, the industry has expanded dramatically from its pre-pandemic size and is projected to reach $80 billion within the next decade. This growth spans various sectors, including medication, food, and auto parts delivery.

Khirika also noted several challenges businesses face in this space. Achieving on-time delivery is vital for customer retention and positive experiences, but high operational costs and efficient route optimization remain significant hurdles. Managing delivery volumes and driver numbers to ensure timely and efficient service is crucial. Consistent customer engagement and evolving retention strategies are necessary due to rising competition.

How Mapbox solutions solve challenges for on demand logistic companies

Khirika shared how Mapbox's capabilities are essential for overcoming all of these challenges. One of the key features is the real-time updating of maps, which ensures that businesses receive seamless data updates without needing manual interventions. This is complemented by real-time and predictive traffic information, a crucial element in the on-demand delivery space. The Mapbox platform is distinguished by its scale and low latency, boasting a highly performant map rendering engine capable of handling and displaying large amounts of custom and live data efficiently.

This technological edge is why numerous on-demand logistics partners, from giants like Amazon to companies specializing in curbside pickup like Wolt and Flyby, choose Mapbox. These collaborations enable businesses to provide superior on-time delivery services, fostering repeat customer business and maintaining competitive advantage in the rapidly growing on-demand logistics industry.

Insights from Ryan Leidigh on Defining and Optimizing On-Demand Logistics

In the next section, Ryan defined on-demand logistics with two key characteristics: fulfillment within 24 hours of order ingestion and no middle mile, meaning orders are fulfilled directly from their current location without intermediary shipping between warehouses. This rapid fulfillment timeline has become more efficient, shrinking from the previous 36-hour window often used by grocery delivery partners.

Ryan outlined five consistent practices among successful on-demand logistics companies. These include order ingestion, matching orders to couriers (whether employees or part-time/on-demand couriers), order dispatch, and delivery. The process involves dynamically assigning orders and determining optimal routes for pickup and delivery, adapting to varying levels of driver availability. Additionally, backend operations such as analytics, tracking, and administration are crucial for efficiency.

Mapbox has tailored its geospatial products to support these practices, creating a comprehensive template for on-demand logistics. This template includes specific products and key performance indicators (KPIs) that companies can use to achieve success. While Mapbox doesn't offer APIs for on-time delivery or driver satisfaction, their solutions are designed to integrate seamlessly into the logistics workflow, enhancing overall performance and customer satisfaction.

How Mapbox Enhances Customer Experience and Operational Efficiency

Ryan Leidigh emphasized the critical role of customer experience in on-demand logistics. He explained that a seamless and engaging brand experience is vital, as any delay over one minute from app opening to order assignment can drive more than 50% of users to competitors. To address this, Mapbox offers customizable solutions that include branded icons, heat maps, and company-specific colors, enhancing the user interface and experience.

Mapbox Address Autofill

One standout feature is the autofill capability, which speeds up the order process by quickly verifying addresses and reducing the time customers spend inputting details. This ensures customers move swiftly from browsing to purchasing. Additionally, geocoding is crucial for converting addresses to precise latitude and longitude coordinates and vice versa, enhancing accuracy for deliveries even in complex locations like sprawling apartment complexes.

Ryan highlighted that Mapbox's low-latency matrix technology significantly reduces the time it takes to assign orders, often less than one second, which minimizes customer wait times and improves the overall experience. This efficiency is why major players like Instacart and Wolt have integrated Mapbox’s geocoding solutions, resulting in faster and more accurate checkouts and better order success rates.

For order matching, reducing slack time and ensuring timely delivery are critical. Mapbox’s solutions help companies optimize the assignment process, minimizing delays between order placement, courier pickup, and final delivery. This not only enhances service level agreements (SLAs) but also improves operational efficiency.

Why Picnic & Wolt partner with Mapbox for on-demand delivery solutions

Ryan shared specific examples of how Mapbox partners benefit from these solutions. Picnic, an on-demand grocer, uses Mapbox to optimize routes for their small delivery vehicles, reducing costs and extending vehicle longevity while ensuring timely deliveries. Wolt, another key partner, successfully reduced late deliveries by using Mapbox's matrix technology, leading to substantial savings in refunded delivery fees and improving customer retention.

For every dollar Wolt invests in Matrix, they save two dollars in reduced refund costs, showcasing a measurable impact on their bottom line and customer satisfaction.
